Speak Inclusively

Speak Inclusively

Imagine you are at a social gathering, and in a corner of the room is a small unassuming group of people. As you wade into their conversation, you begin to evangelize the principles of courage, endurance and resolve, emphasizing the importance of living our lives to make a difference in the world now, and for future generations, only to learn after the party the small group you were speaking with included Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, and Mother Theresa.

We all must be careful of how we communicate with others so as not to come across as arrogant and condescending; assuming they are ignorant of the knowledge we possess. When in fact, they might have a greater depth and breadth of life experiences than our own. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all wore an index around our necks itemizing all that we have experienced and the lessons learned for others to refer to before taking the role of the instructor? This is why it’s best to communicate in an inclusive manner rather than an exclusive one.
