Resolutions
On January 2nd, 1671 the Scottish writer, Anne Halkett, wrote entries in her diary under the title “Resolutions”. Of her several pledges, one such pledge was: “I will not offend any more”. This 17th-century writer has become known as one of the earliest recorded New Year’s pledgers. It seems appropriate for me to reference her given that her entry was and is an etiquette resolution. If we could state etiquette in its simplest form, it would be as Ms. Halkett desired, to not offend any more.
