Picnic Etiquette

Picnic Etiquette

The warm weather tends to create a desire to be involved in a range of activities. One of my favourite things to do is share an outdoor meal with family and friends. Picnic anyone?

Whether we are planning a picnic with one friend or a group of people, there are certain considerations to keep in mind for us to have an enjoyable and successful experience. Although we have them in a location outside of our homes, it is still necessary to prepare for picnics that have the same comfort and ease of home. Here are a few guidelines for a successful picnic experience:

  • Choose a location that can suit individual seating preferences.  A place with equal amounts of sun and shade always helps strike the perfect balance for those who like direct sun and those who prefer to shelter from the rays.

  • The outdoors tend to encourage an increase in appetite. Always try to bring adequate food to ensure that everyone is well-fed.

  • If someone else brings food to share, sample their food and don’t neglect to compliment them. Your guests will feel appreciated for the effort they put into feeding the party.

  • Choose clothing that is appropriate for playing outdoor games and the mobility of picnic seating styles.

  • Try to wear shoes that are appropriate for walking in your chosen location. Sandals tend to do well for the sand, while tennis shoes and sneakers are also suitable for more grassy areas.

  • Bring shelter from the sun and rain - a picnic tent or umbrella should do.

  • If you’re bringing along dogs, remember their leashes to help keep them away from other picnickers.

  • Keep your music volume down to avoid annoying other picnickers. While it is perfectly acceptable to play music as you mingle, regulating the volume so it only entertains your group is a courteous move that others will appreciate.

  • Be considerate of other picnickers and don’t occupy more space than needed.

  • When you have finished eating and playing games, clean up after yourselves so the next group finds a clean space to occupy.

  • Most importantly, enjoy yourself as you soak up the sun and share an outdoor meal with your loved ones!
