Easter Dinner Thoughts

Easter Dinner Thoughts

Holidays always give us a good reason to get together with loved ones. After the last two years, we have an even deeper appreciation for being able to gather with friends and family. As is common in many circles, there is usually one person or family member who enjoys hosting and always has the best meals on hand. Those of us who take on the responsibility of hosting from time to time realise just how much work goes into it and are always eager to lend a hand. As we look forward to gathering with our loved ones this Easter, let us consider ways we can make a positive difference as guests and hosts.

There is usually a determined time when everyone is expected to be at the table. Let us be mindful of it and not keep others waiting or the food getting cold.

The host is usually in charge of preparing the main meal for the day; however, it is good practice to offer to bring a dish. If the host accepts, bring something that will feed more than yourself.

Consider having kid-friendly dishes for the little ones, as some might not appreciate the adult menu.

After the meal, all hands should be on deck for clean-up. As the saying goes, “many hands make light work”, and most hosts would appreciate the help. If the host declines any assistance, we need to respect that. You don’t want to insist on helping and accidentally break a glass or dish.

What young child doesn’t enjoy an Easter egg hunt? Plan your search based on the number of children in your party and their age range. Consider separating the older and younger children so everyone can enjoy themselves in an age-appropriate manner and not deal with potential tears.

Don’t forget to bring a gift for the host; boxed chocolates, a small potted plant or a tin of cookies are some options.

While hosting is enjoyable, it is physical and mental work. Our personal spaces are dear to us, so leave enough time for your host to wind down their day and retire at an appropriate time.

Most of all, remember to have fun and enjoy the company of family and friends as you continue creating memories.

Happy Easter!
