Bulk bin code, Please
I had an interesting encounter the other day while at the grocery store. Two gentlemen ahead of me at the cashier had decided to pick up large quantities of bulk candy, and had neglected to write down the product or bulk bin code for the items.
The cashier was mildly annoyed by this, yet kept her customer service wits about her. She courteously served the first gentleman and explained to him the importance of writing down the code. She went on to politely wish him a good day with a smile on her face.
When the second gentleman came forward to be served he presented the same problem. I could see her inwardly seething yet trying to look as calm as possible on the outside. The cashier repeated the same instructions she had given to his colleague, then asked the second gentleman if he needed a grocery bag to put his candy in. He responded with a “yep”. She looked him straight in the eye and said, “Yes Please”. By this time she was openly perturbed, and yet, somehow, the person she was dealing with was totally oblivious to what was going on.
Working in customer service means dealing with people ranging from extremely polite, to absurdly rude, while still being pleasantly helpful to customers regardless of what the day has offered. On this occasion, these gentlemen were completely blind as to the challenge they presented and how they made the cashier’s job even more difficult.
