The Art of Sharing
“Sharing is caring” is a phrase that most of us are probably familiar with. In our home, we were encouraged to share with our siblings from a young age. Our teachers also supported this concept as they helped us practice sharing in a classroom setting.
Those of us who were not keen on sharing were surprised at the realization that sharing didn’t end in the classroom or our homes. There is an implied expectation to share our spaces with those we interact with on a day-to-day basis.
Here are a few tips for successful sharing in some common spaces within communities:
THE ROAD
Whether as a driver or a pedestrian, it is important to know how to share the road with others. Successful road sharing communicates consideration for other road users and creates an easy flow of movement for everyone. The rule of thumb is to abide by the rules of the highway code. For example, driving at the recommended speed limit, using the correct lane for driving and passing, and crossing the road at designated crosswalks. It is also important to be kind to those who may make a mistake on the road. Who knows? They may be new to the country, city, or area and trying to figure their way around, or they might be dealing with some personal stress. Demonstrating our frustration towards them will undoubtedly increase their anxiety and sometimes result in them making more mistakes.
THE GROCERY STORE
Most strangers we meet will be at the grocery store. How we share the use of this common shopping space can help create a positive community atmosphere for most shoppers. One way we can show consideration is by being a mindful shopper. For example, if there are a few packets of pasta left on the shelf, by taking only what we need might benefit a family in greater need. We can show the same courtesy at the check-out lane by not standing too close to those in front of us, and being mindful of the topics and language we use when in conversation with our family member or friend on the shopping trip with us.
THE WALKING TRAIL
Whenever the weather is favorable, many of us prefer to make use of the outdoor public spaces to get in our daily exercise or simply soak in the sun. When walking, running or skating on walking trails, let us stick to the preferred side of the trail depending on where we are. Some of us are used to walking on the right and passing on the left. Yet when travelling to other countries we quickly learn that not everyone prescribes to this idea and we can avoid bumping into people by taking a cue from the locals. Let us also be conscious of not blocking the trail if we are in a group.
Being able to share takes practice and patience for many of us. It is inevitable that we will meet those who are less skilled and may need an extra hand. In those moments, let us respond with grace, and continue to strengthen our communities by using public spaces fairly with everyone. Happy sharing!
